Opener “Canticle” has a contemporary acoustic groove enhanced by deft percussion and some exquisite vocal harmonies. Jonathan possesses a fine voice and is clearly an accomplished guitarist and songwriter. “Bonnie Light Horseman” is a more traditional folk song with some subtle fiddle and cello work and Jonathan’s voice contrasts with Chris While beautifully. Jonathan has surrounded himself with some exemplary musicians that support the songs ably, while retaining a laid back, assured feel. Jonathan’s experience shines through this set of songs; this is an accomplished album in every way, from the songwriting craft to the musicianship on display right through to the subtle production that captures the performances without detracting and resisting the temptation to add too much. There is an incredible depth and maturity here; the songs are accessible while repeated listening reveals so many more layers. A beautiful record – let’s hope there’s not such a long wait for Jonathan’s next release.
